Week 12 (November 17 - 21)

This is the last week before Thanksgiving break and we are still working on poetry. There will be a Thanksgiving assignment.

Monday/Tuesday (11/17-11/18):
1. Update Notebook for Unit 3: Introduction to Poetry.
2. Discuss Shakespeare's "Sonnet 73: That time of year."
3. Villanelle: Notes (page 65 in Notebook).
4. Read "Do Not Go Gentle into That Good Night," do questions #1-3 from p. 249 in Sound & Sense. (Write out questions and answers onto page 64 in Notebook.)
5. Activity: Start Intro/Thesis/Essay Practice (page 67 in Notebook).

HW:
1. Lit Devices
2. Finish Intro/Thesis Statement on "Death" poems.

Wednesday/Thursday (11/19-11/20):
1. Continue Intro/Thesis/Essay Practice (page 66 in Notebook).
2. Poem Carousel Activity.

Week 11 (November 12 - 14)

What a short week! We start on poetry this week with emphasis on the sonnet.

Wednesday/Thursday and Friday (11/12-11/14):

1. Read Richard Orloff's play Oedi.
2. Discuss elements of humor and comedy (informally).
3. Start Poetry:
a. Took notes on: elements of the sonnet, Italian and English sonnets, rhyme scheme, rhythm and meter.
b. Focus on John Donne's "Death, be not proud" (aka "Holy Sonnet X"); do the following with the poem:
i. determine rhyme scheme and identify as Italian or English
ii. paraphrase the content of the poem (line by line or "sentence by sentence")
iii. scan the poem for meter (i.e. iambic pentameter?, stressed and unstressed syllables, etc)

Homework for the weekend:

1. Read William Shakespeare's sonnet "That time of year" and do the following with the poem:
a. determine rhyme scheme and identify as Italian or English
b. paraphrase the content of the poem (line by line or "sentence by sentence")
c. scan the poem for meter (i.e. iambic pentameter?, stressed and unstressed syllables, etc)

Weekend 10.5 (November 8-11)

This weekend's homework assignment:

1. Read Chapters 1 and 14 in Sound and Sense.

2. Pay special attention to the following poems in the book:
a. "Dulce et Decorum Est" (page 7)
b. "Death, be not proud" (page 252)
c. "America" (page 254)
d. "Ozymandias" (pages 121-122)

Week 10 (November 3 - 7)

This is the last week of the quarter and there are some big events, namely the Oedipus Test and your Notebook Check! Good Luck!

Assignments:

Monday/Tuesday (11/3-11/7):
1. Vocabulary Quiz (#26-40).
2. Warm-Up on top half of page 58 in Notebook: What does Oedipus' story tell you about the relationship between FATE and FREE WILL?
3. Review Oedipus: 3 Translations Activity.
4. Complete Motif Processes
5. Summarize Oedipus the King in 5 words and defend your word choice. (on bottom half of page 58 in Notebook)

HW:
1. Study for Oedipus Test.

Wednesday/Thursday (11/5-11/6):
1. Oedipus Test.

1. Finish Notebook

Friday (11/7):
1. Notebook Check due.

Week 9 (October 27-31)

This was a strange week with the PSAT, Blood Drive, Halloween and my three-day absence. Hope everything went well!
