1. Notebook due.
2. College Admissions Committee activity.

HW: Rough Draft of college essay...due Thursday.

Thursday:
1. Peer Review
2. "Barbie Doll" discussion...lit. devices

HW: Revision of college essay...due Friday.

Friday:
1. Peer Review/Self-Editing Checklist
2. "Barbie Doll" or "Rite of Passage" discussion...lit. devices.

HW:
1. Final Draft of college essay due Monday.

Week 3: September 21 - 25

Monday:
1. Discuss School Poems: "First Grade" and "The School Children."  Brainstorm lit. devices on p. 22 in notebook.
2. Subject vs. Theme (p. 33 in notebook) handout; brainstorm thematic statements.
3. One-page theme response...to be turned in to teacher on Tuesday.
4. Quick-write: Who is the villain in Wuthering Heights?  That is, who is most to blame for all of the trouble and grief in the novel? (top of p. 36 in notebook).

HW: Theme response (due Tuesday) and read "Villain" article (pp. 37-43) (due Thursday).

Tuesday and Wednesday:
1. Symbol/Motif Hunt (pp. 34-35 in notebook): Each group is assigned a symbol/motif to present to class.  Develop a theory about the symbol/motif.  Everyone takes notes on the presentation.

HW: Finish "Villain" article

Thursday:
1. Discussion of Hafley's "Villain" article.  Process: Explain whether or not you agree with Hafley's thesis that Nelly Dean is the true villain in the novel (bottom of p. 36 in notebook).

HW: Lit. devices

Friday:
1. Wuthering Heights in 5 words (p. 45 in notebook).  Select 5 words that best describe or summarize the novel.  Defend your word choice.
2. WH Passage 10 Mult. Choice (pp. 46 - 47 in notebook).
3. Pairs read poems: "Barbie Doll" and "Rite of Passage"...SIFT strategy.

HW: Choose 3 colleges, research application/essay requirements--bring prompts on Monday.

Week 2: September 14 - 18

Monday and Tuesday:
1. Go over syllabus and notebook; clock buddies
2. Discuss methods of characterization (p. 29 in notebook)
3. Process: Considering Edgar's appearance and personality, how is he a foil for Heathcliff? (p. 28 in notebook)
HW: Setting graphic organizer (p. 31 in notebook)--Wuthering Heights due on Thursday.

Wednesday:
1. Lit. Devices Project: Overview, Sample, Function Discussion, etc. (pp. 13-21).
HW: Setting graphic organizer (p. 31 in notebook)--Wuthering Heights due on Thursday

Thursday:
1. Lit. Devices Project: General Grading, How to Cite Passages, Q & A.
2. Discussion of Setting: Wuthering Heights...take notes on graphic organizer (p. 31 in notebook).
HW: Setting graphic organizer (p. 31 in notebook)--Thrushcross Grange due on Friday.

Friday:
1. Finish discussion of setting: Thrushcross Grange...take notes on graphic organizer (p. 31 in notebook).
2. Process: Discuss how each setting symbolizes and how this adds to your understanding of the novel's conflicts (p. 30 in  notebook).
HW: Read School Poems (p. 23 in notebook) and complete SIFT strategy...be prepared to discuss both poems on Monday.

Week 1: Sept. 8 - 11
